If cockatoos appeal to you, but you don’t have the space for something the size of a Moluccan or Umbrella cockatoo, check out a Goffin cockatoo.
They are about the same length as the cockatiels, but only because they don’t have the long pointed tail the cockatiels do. They are actually heavier but still a small bird at only 12 inches.
Goffins are white with yellow under the tail, wing and ear coverlet feathers. They have pink feathers between the beak and the eyes and under their crests.
Goffin cockatoos have the same distinctive crown on top of their heads that raise when they are frightened that all cockatoos sport, although theirs are smaller in proportion to their body size than it is on the other cockatoos.
Goffin cockatoos may not be very big, but for the size of them they can get pretty noisy. The larger cockatoos are louder, but these birds can be loud when they want to be.
It’s important to play with and socialize with your Goffin, and for when you aren’t available to them they need a good supply of interesting toys toys to keep them entertained.
The cage will need to be big enough to hold all the toys, perches, food and water dishes as well as to give your parrot plenty of room to move around, climb and play.
Some Goffins will develop a large vocabulary, but there’s no guarantee that yours will. Some just won’t talk.
When getting a cage be sure that the latch isn’t accessible from the inside. Goffin’s have an amazing ability to solve puzzles and will figure out how to open the cage door.
If you have the time to spend socializing and training it a Goffin cockatoo is a playful, loving and entertaining pet.
